WOVEN IDENTITIES | DEWITT MALLARY ARTIST TALK

Antique Tribal Bags and Rugs from Iran, Afghanistan, and Central Asia

From ancient times through the early 20th century in the Near East, designs woven into utilitarian objects were one expression of tribal identity. This exhibition illustrates themes and variations in antique weavings from tribal groups in Iran, Afghanistan, and western Central Asia. These are objects that were made for domestic use and consumption, not for export. Some were everyday utilitarian objects, and some were made for special occasions, particularly weddings. Most are made from wool, with brilliant colors made from natural dyestuffs, processed with techniques developed and refined over many centuries.
